The good ol' sound of a record

I didn't realize Doris Day sang this... maybe Tay will add a little of this to her Sinatra collection. I am enjoying listening to the older music she is finding, where the recordings are flat, the scratches are heard, the musicians are actually playing, and it is meant to be played at a decibel that won't make you go deaf.
The other day, on the way to drop the kids at school, I had the pleasure of listening to this versions of "You Are My Sunshine". I was in tears within the first few seconds, I am finding as the girls get older and they are hating me and more, I find myself searching for the little rays of light that show me, I just might be doing something right. I saw my sunshine, that morning, a glimpse of hope, the emotions of the memories, connections the song made, the words she said right before it played. I just could hold it, I bawled like a big fat baby!
You see "The Mustard"* song is Tay and my's song, I am not sure many will understand I am not sure she will ever understand just what it means to me, but all those quiet nights in the NICU, I would sing it to her, over and over, but I wasn't really singing it to her, I was praying.

*I only knew the words to the part they sung on the mustard commercial, sad huh?

Along another note, I am enjoying getting to know Newt Call and HellBitch. I accidentally bought the "Lonesome Dove - Mini Series" instead of the "Lonesome Dove" the movie but it was both TV seasons for $18 bucks. It turned out alright because "Comanche Moon" really left me with a feeling of urgent need to find out what happens to little Newt. I know I am watching things in weird order, but I can't stop now I am feeding my immediate need. So far Newt is turning out to be everything William Call wasn't in "Comanche Moon", I am in LOVE, he can marry my daughter anytime!

Anyhow... its 8:15 ... Johns at Cold Stone now... and I can fit 3 more episodes in!

  1. Thanks for the jog back to the past, both great songs. There is something about the old music that stirs the emotions, perhaps becuase they take me back to my youth and when the sounds were new. Doris Day was a beautiful lady, had not thought of her in a long time. Should have called me, I still remember some of the lyrics to that song. Johnny Cash, never be another one of him, the voice will never be duplicated. Did you see his movie, "Walk The Line", well worth watching and it will give you a lot of insight into his life. Do you have a record player that plays the platters? We may still have one in the crawlspace somewhere. We still have a good collection of platters, I am sure some original Elvis and Cash. Glad to hear that you are into the Lonesome Dove series, even if you are watching them in mixed order. Your mother has watched the entire series now, of course I had to watch them as well. Lonesome Dove will give you Newts life between Commanche Moon and Return to Lonesome Dove. I would love to see a sequel come out on Newt, as he just rode off into the sunset. I always thought, that if I were to write it, I would have him take up the law as a sheriff in Montana for a few years and then take a cattle herd north and start a ranch in Canada. Then this year, on our return trip home, on the upper Fraiser River where I got the pictures of the Big Horn Ram, we found a billboard advertising the "Hat Creek Ranch", we found the side road that directed us to the ranch, after traveling about 15 miles up the road your mother finally convinced me to give up my search and get back on course. Getting back to the intersection,we found "Hat Creek Ranch" right at the intersection of the highway, but it was closed for the season. If it is any consolation, with pre-teens and teens, we sometimes have to search for signs that they love and respect us, every once in a while a glimpse will show through their desire to be "grown up" to remind you that they are still your little ones, just never doubt their love, it will always be there for their mommy and daddy.

  2. Yes Ii watched "Walk the Line" ... Great Movie!!
We have a "platter" player and it MIGHT still have a needle, but we only own to records. I should dig it out and share with the girls.

Last night I met Lou, Buffalo Bills wife... what a tolerant lady.

  3. Lou? Buffalo Bill? They are not in the Lonesome Dove Series ~ what movie are you watching?

  4. What are you watching? 'cause William Cody (aka Buffalo Bill) is a HUGE part of the Series. I watched episode 16 last night and it is titled "Buffalo Bills Wild West Show", Newt and his wife went back East to see the Buffalo Bill's show that was written about Newt and Bill's fight with Crow Child and Iron Bull.

  5. Heidi, I do not know what you are watching. In the original Larry McMurtry's series of the Lonesome Dove series, there is no Buffalo Bill and Newt is never married. The last time you see Newt, is when he passes up the chance to marry a widow and take over a large ranch in Montana. Woodrow Call and Newt had made her a widow by killing her ruthless husband. The series ended with Newt and Capt. Call talking on a hillside overlooking his ranch, Capt. Call came close to giving Newt his name and gave Newt his pocket watch, shook hands and Newt rode off into the sunset. The is how the last series "Return to Lonesome Dove" stopped. Sounds to me as if you are watching a re-done weekly TV series, which I did not know existed. Perhaps, someone did pick up the story after Newt left the Hat Creek Ranch.

  6. In this Series Newt marries a lady by the name of Hannah Peale, her father runs the news paper in Curtis Wells.
So far Woodrow Call is only talked about. Newt appears to be a young man, early 20 maybe late teens and has been given Woodrow's name.

    Here check it out ...

    The Outlaw Years

  7. Well, I will be dammed. Someone stole my idea about writing Newt's life, looks like the original author, Larry McMurtry so I guess it is all right. I have heard of this title, but did not know it was a take off from the original story line. Rick Schroder played Newt in the orignal series. I checked out your link, so I guess I still have one more series to watch. Evidently, in the series you are watching, Captain Call is gone because the last you see of him and Pea is in "Streets of Laredo". Capt. Call looses his leg like Gus did in Lonesome Dove. He retires as a Texas Ranger and lives with Pea and his wife on a small ranch, he adopts little blind girl from Mexico after her mother is killed by her own outlaw son that Call was after. Pea's wife is the prostitute that lived in Lonesome Dove and made the cattle drive north, she was one of Gus's loves. Now you have to watch the entire series to get the entire history. Looking forward to finding the copy of the series that you have.

  10. I have always loved this song...although I never knew any of the verses...just the chorus...used to sing it to my kids all the time too...although I can feel your prayers in the nicu with this,,,makes me singing it to mine seem mute...

  11. Sorry - did not get your phone message until this morning (Monday). We seldom check our phone anymore ~ but to answer your inquisitive thoughts, here is your pesonal list. Please clip and save:
    1) Lonesome Dove
    2) Reurn To Lonesome Dove
    3) Dead Man's Walk
    4) Streets of Laredo
    5) Commanche Moon
    6) Outlaw Years (Your Discovery)
If you are not westerned out, then a great recommendation would be "The Shootist", in my humble opinion the best movie that John Wayne ever made and his last. That should give you about 24 hours of viewing if you take no popcorn or wine breaks. If you are still not western out, since you were looking at Clint Eastwoods movies, "Outlaw Josey Wales" was his best, in both mine and his opinion. Then of course, you watch all of those then you have to also watch Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson. If you got hooked on Robert Duval as Gus in Lonesome Dove, he has made no bad movie, all of his should be on a must watch list, from his westerns, drama, and comedy (2nd Hand Lions)

  12. I liked Duval in "The Preacher". His daughter, Shelly, was in "The Shining" and my Bro' - Rod - and I decided NOBODY could ever cry as ugly as she did in that flick. The children's stories were great, though.

  13. I do not want to watch anything but the original lonesome dove with Duvall as Gus. When Gus refuses to be amputated to save his life..that is classic western.

And, as for the daughters, you sound like a great mother.

I just chose to move to a new church, and was a little surprised that the most angry and mean kid to me is the one that took it the hardest that we were leaving. Go figure.

  14. Friar - funny you commenting just now, OTHERWISE I would be very angry you ruined the movie... but I just finished watching "Lonesome Dove" the movie/mini series last night. AND OMG it was the best of the best movies... I would recommend NOT to watch the TV series!

As for the girls we try... thanks for the kudos.

I am a little envious of you and Jen running around Colorado like that. Colorado would be the ONLY other place I would settle.... congratulations on your move.

Sounds like I have been watching to many westerns.

  15. You actually got to watch "Lonesome Dove"! I take it from your comment that you thought it was much better than the series of "outlaw years" that you watched. A fatal error was made in this series,if they had been released or written in order of the time sequence, all of them would have been better received. But, with Lonsesome Dove coming out first, how is anyone going to compete with Duval, Tommy Lee Jones, or Angelica Houston as Claie Allen. They established the characters that they played, others could not duplicate their performance. I have watched it so many times, but the final scenes of Gus still tear me up or when Captain Call returns to Lonesome Dove after burying Gus and the reporter calls hiom a "man of vision", he pauses and says, "yes, a man of vision" and reflects back on those that he had lost. Indeed a classic. Jon Voight, did do a good job in picking up the role of Captain Call in Return to Lonesome Dove".

  16. The move to Fowler has gotten me thinking a lot about old westerns. Where Colorado Springs is up against the mountains, Fowler is out on the prarie (although only an hour from the mountain). Jen keeps saying on clear days when we visit Fowler that she can see the mountains, but you really have to squint. In many ways, it reminds me of where an old west town might be.

The town lies in the river valley, with a large desertish plateau to the north of town. You can almost imagine watching Indians seeing the wagons come along the Santa Fe trail (the town is on the Santa Fe trail)and wondering where in the heck all these strange white folks came from. Not far from the Oklahoma panhandle or New Mexico..yet it has this far off somewhat untamed feel to it, which is rare for Colorado.

  17. Dad,
I haven't watched "The out Law Years" yet, that is the second season of the TV show... but I think there is another Lonesome Dove movie also titled "the Outlaw Years". I am glad I watch "Comanche Moon" before Lonesome Dove, there was a lot more meaning in some parts because I knew what had happened in the past. Like Gus's Love for Claire, or Claire's hatred for Woodrow. but I think I will wait to watch "Return to Lonesome Dove"...I hear the actors are different?

  18. Opps the hubby didn't sign out! That was me!

  19. You surly do get alot of hits for old postings! Yes, there are different actors in Return to Lonesome Dove except for Newt but it does play well into the original Lonesome Dove in continuing the saga. Friar Tuck, "Go West Young Man" Just a few miles west of you is one of the most beautiful areas in the United States. If you are not familar with the state, go south through Alamosa, just a few miles you will commence crossing the Rockies over Wolf Creek Pass and on the other side the small cvommunity of Pagosa Springs. Sixty miles west of Pagosa is Durango, turn north on highway 550 and go over Molas Pass, Coal Bank Pass and into Silverton. Continuing north you will go over Red Mountain Pass and down the canyon and Million Dollar Highway into Ouray. Continuing north, for 32 miles to Montrose, turn east and head for home. This route will take you over Cierro Summit and Blue Mesa into the Gunnison River Valley, over Monarch Pass. In Salida, you can take the turn off and go down through the Arkansas River valley through Canyon city and into Colorado Springs. A great weekend trip.

  20. Friar if you cannot tell, my family is from Colorado, I was born there. I was too young when we lived there to remember much, but I did get the opportunity to see the Western part of the State a few years ago (okay maybe more then a few years ago) with my Dad.
I couldn't believe the colors of the rocks. we discussed stopping to play cowboy's and Indian's. Maybe someday when Dad is old and crazy I will get him to go play with me.

  21. o.k., I will make the 21st posting, after the discussion in the comments of the majority of this posting, I will bet you do not know what movie I am currently listening to and watching. I really do not need to see it, I know what is happening just by the lines. "ever eat a frog"? "you call this fast traveling". Would be fun to tour Colorado as a family again and all the grand children, I wonder how much a 50 foot tour bus would cost? That drive from Alamosa to Montrose via Durango is one the best. But, you would love the rock formations of Utah as well, I am going to spend a lot more time in that area. Of course, the black hills of South Dakota is nothing to sneeze at, nor the Ozarks in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area. Love it all.

  22. They jump out of the pan you know, you have to catch em' and put them back.

  23. Hey, I am proud of you - you picked up onthe lines and those are not typical lines you lock away, you must have paid close attention to the movie. Did I tell you that I ate frog legs? First time, last fall in Lakeview, Arkansas with Lanny and Sharon. When I ordered them form the waitress I had to giggle thinking of those lines. They are good, the meat is snow white. Maybe if the girls can catch enough before they come south for the spring, we can have a "leg cook out" at the HITW.

  24. I really like the character, I was pretty mad at Blue Duck!

  25. @ STAN
I have made a little of that trip in reverse. A few years ago I got a new vehicle and decided to test it out on a road trip. I went through woodland park and buena vista then over to monarch, gunnison, and montrose. I did the road from montrose to durango in the dark (except for ouray at sunset). the next day to cortez, down through navajo and into the hopi reservation, then through winslow to pheonix.

On the way back I went up from Santa Fe through Taos, and then to Alamosa, Salida and Canon City.

I have always wanted to catch Pagosa Springs.

On our honeymoon Jen and I went through Santa Fe and Lake Powell over into Bryce and Zion in Southern Utah. We wanted to go to Arches and Canyonlands in Utah, but weather kept us from going there. (Both red rocks).

I still like Garden of the Gods here in the Springs too.

But I am jealous of you all. I miss Alaska...especially with summer coming.
